Why Do We Raise Wagyu x Angus Crossbreeds?

Our Genetics: The Foundation of Exceptional Flavor

At Premium Dakota Beef, quality starts with genetics. There are four main types of Wagyu cattle: Japanese Brown (Akaushi), Japanese Black (Kuroge), Japanese Shorthorn, and Japanese Polled.
We proudly raise the Japanese Brown, or Akaushi, a breed often known in Japan as the “Emperor’s Breed.” Considered a national treasure, Akaushi cattle were not allowed to leave Japan until a small group arrived in the U.S. in 1994 — and we’re honored to continue that legacy right here in Dakota country.

All of our Wagyu genetics come from Prime 360 Beef, a trusted partner committed to producing world-class bulls that ensure our herd’s strength, consistency, and quality for generations to come.

Why We Chose the Akaushi Breed

We’re passionate about Akaushi for many reasons — but it all comes down to quality, consistency, and care.
Akaushi cattle are known for their:

  • Exceptional marbling that delivers rich, buttery flavor in every bite.

  • Strong crossbreeding potential for balanced, high-performing offspring.

  • Gentle temperament that supports a calm, stress-free environment.

  • Ideal frame and structure for efficient, sustainable growth.

The result? A premium product that stands apart — flavorful, tender, and naturally healthier.

The Power of Hybrid Vigor

If you remember “hybrid vigor” from science class, you know it means stronger, healthier offspring when two breeds are combined. In the world of beef, it’s a game-changer.

By crossbreeding our full-blood Akaushi bulls with Angus cows, we blend the very best traits from both lines:

  • From Akaushi: exceptional marbling, tenderness, and flavor.

  • From Angus: efficiency, adaptability, and hearty performance.

This combination creates cattle with improved health and disease resistance, reducing the need for medical treatments and producing a cleaner, healthier final product.
Better yet, this balance also keeps production costs down — allowing us to offer premium Wagyu beef at a more accessible price without ever compromising on quality.

Naturally Bred, Naturally Better

At Premium Dakota Beef, we believe nature knows best. That’s why we use a natural breeding program with no artificial insemination. Each August, our bulls join the herd for spring calving, selecting the healthiest cows naturally.

This hands-off approach not only strengthens our herd’s genetics but also ensures that every calf is born into a calm, low-stress environment — because happy, stress-free cattle produce better beef.
